Hiiumaa is Estonia’s second largest island, but Hiiu County is the smallest county in Estonia. There is only one local government on the island – Hiiumaa Municipality – which is divided into five rural municipalities: Emmaste, Käina, Kärdla, Kõrgessaare and Pühalepa.
Hiiumaa is bordered by 326 kilometres of winding coastline and around 200 islets.
As is characteristic for islanders, it is as if being entrepreneurial is encoded into the people of Hiiumaa. On the one hand, it reflects their ability to survive, and, on the other, the mentality that when something has to be done, you need to roll up your sleeves and do it yourself.
Hiiumaa has always been an industrial island. Now, the three largest industrial sectors of the island are plastic and assembly, forestry and timber, and the food industry.
Hiiumaa’s ambassadors are well-known people of Estonia who are associated with the island and always honour Hiiumaa with their words and their actions.
To show our appreciation, we have created for them a T-shirt made especially for Hiiumaa’s ambassadors.
It is wonderful to live on Hiiumaa. Knowing that you do not have to leave after a weekend spent on the island because you actually live here is a feeling that is impossible to be put into words.
Hiiumaa charms with its peace and quiet, clean nature, safe living environment, close-knit and caring community and unique culture.
