2. CONTRACT STONES

The origin and purpose of this large pile of boulders is unclear. However, one thing is certain. Someone went to a lot of trouble to carry and stack these rocks. One theory is that the boulders mark the grave of a Swedish king named Ingvar who ruled in the late 6th century. This story also says that a lot of gold was buried with him. Another theory is that sailors would bring one large rock to this place before they went to sea. They believed that by doing this they made an agreement with God which would bring them good luck on their voyage and ensure a safe return. This is why they were called contract stones. A third theory is that this place served some religious purpose for the followers of Estonia's ancient religion. Some people even believe that the boulders were placed here much more recently by the landlord of this area, Baron Ungern-Sternberg. He lived near here in the late 18th century. He came from a wealthy German family and traveled all over the world in his younger days. He saw many things during his travels, but the thing that impressed him most was the pyramids in Egypt. When he finally settled in Hiiumaa he decided to try and build a small replica of a pyramid to remind him of his travels. However, it proved extremely difficult to construct a pyramid out of round, uncut boulders so the end result was somewhat less than perfect. It is unlikely that the real truth about this place will ever be known. It will remain forever a mystery for visitors to ponder and locals to debate.
