This museum is a must-see for any visitors to Hiiumaa. Established in 1967, it traces the history of Hiiumaa from the early stone age to the end of the Soviet era. The museum is in an old house that was part of Kassari estate. The manor house has long since burned down but several buildings remain and the museum is in the former home of the estate supervisor. Most of the exhibits are only described in Estonian and Russian but work is being done to produce an English- language guide book. In the meantime, there is usually someone working there who speaks at least some English so please take the time to walk through this interesting and educational display of Hiiumaa history. Guided tours in English can be arranged by calling the museum.
